The hammered dulcimer is a stringed instrument originating from Central Asia with a culture of four-thousand years. It has a trapezoidal shape and can be sounded both by plucking and with hammers. In various parts of the world there are many variants which are used in folk, classical and even in pop music and the names for it show great diversity; (psalterium, salterio, qanun, kantele, kannel, gusli are the plucked types, while kim, santour, santouri, yangqin, hackbrett, hammered dulcimer, tympanon, cimbaly, etc. represent the types played with hammers).
Hungarian people consider the hammered dulcimer as a typically Hungarian instrument – but at the same time the Chinese, Iranians, Indians, Germans, French and many other nations regard it as their national instrument. Yet, we know very little about it, compared with the other musical instruments.
Viktória Herencsár’s book acquaints the reader with this special, beautiful and mysterious instrument. It introduces the history and the types of dulcimer, the ways of playing it, the more significant instrument making workshops, its professional and musical bibliography, the symbols of score notations for dulcimer, as well as the state of its education both in Hungary and abroad.
